This lecture expands upon themes raised in the exhibition at the Morgan Library and Museum, titled “The Book of Marvels: Imagining the Medieval World” (January 24 to May 25. The show focuses on late medieval illuminated manuscripts that evince the ways in which European elites imagined foreign cultures. Highlights include rare illustrated manuscripts of Marco Polo and John Mandeville and a spectacular medieval map of the Holy Land, based on pilgrimage accounts.
