There will be a presentation of Medved’s research and a light reception. \nPublic parks are the theater of New York City civic life\, serving as spaces of recreation\, rest\, learning\, and protest. They host the diverse\, occasionally conflicting desires of the living\, while simultaneously exhibiting a record of our shared public history. Medved’s research concerns the contemporary use of park memorial spaces in the Bronx\, Brooklyn\, and Manhattan\, specifically those that are consecrated burial sites. \nIn A Breathing Place\, Medved explores what it means to designate public space as sacred at four case study sites: the Prison Ship Martyrs Memorial in Fort Greene Park\, the Enslaved African burial ground in Van Cortlandt Park\, the public cemetery on Hart Island\, and the National September 11 Memorial at the World Trade Center. \nAbout the Speaker\nAmelia Medved\, FCRH ‘23\, majored in environmental studies and visual arts. She currently works as a studio assistant at SCAPE\, a New York City-based landscape architecture firm. Medved is passionate about environmental justice\, specifically with a focus on parks equity and community-based ecological stewardship. Bloom will be in conversation with writer Lauren Goldenberg. \nThe memoir narrates Emily Bloom’s journey toward and through motherhood\, a path that has become\, for the average woman\, laden with data and medical technology. Bloom faces decisions regarding genetic testing and diagnosis—technologies that offer the illusion of certainty but carry the weight of hard decisions. Her desire to know more thrusts her back into the history of science\, as she traces the discoveries that impacted the modern state of pregnancy and motherhood. With the birth of their daughter\, who is diagnosed with congenital deafness and later Type 1 diabetes\, Bloom and her husband find their life centered around medical data\, devices\, and doctor’s visits—but also made richer and fuller by parenting an exceptional child. \nRegistration is required for this event. \n\nThis event is open to alumni\, faculty/staff\, parents\, students\, and the public. In Ignatius’s spirit\, we now look for seeds of hope\, seeds of transformation\, that are a call to climate action. \nWork will be displayed during the week of April 4–8 at Lincoln Center and Rose Hill campuses. Performance pieces will be incorporated into the showcases’ opening receptions. Alcenat asks what historical lessons can be taken to explain the rise\, fall\, and failures of black citizenship in an Atlantic economy that retains the vestiges of black slavery next to white freedom. In addition\, he inquires\, what changed\, and what remained the same\, if we consider that over time from 1619 to 2019\, black people in the Western Hemisphere live with freedom without economic citizenship\, and “reconciliation” without reparations for slavery? Badenes\, S.J\, visiting Loyola Chair will give his lecture\, ‘Sacra conversazione?: Catholicism\, Sexuality\, and Violence in Federico García Lorca and Caravaggio’ at our Lincoln Center campus on October 24th and at Rosehill on November 14th. \nThe lecture sets up a “sacred conversation” between works by Federico García Lorca (1898-1936) and Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (1571-1601) in order to demonstrate how Caravaggio’s work sheds light on Lorca’s dialectical process between negative and positive religious connotations\, a dynamic of concealment and revelation\, and multilayered expressiveness. Though from different centuries\, countries\, and artistic traditions\, both artists share topics that are tangentially related. Among them are scenes of martyrdom where Catholicism\, sexuality and violence co-exist in unsettling ways. \nWe invite all Fordham faculty\, students\, and administrators to please join us at Fr.
