SUMMARY:2023 Anastasi Lecture: 'Trying to Make Ourselves Useful'
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a lecture with Baruch Fischhoff\, Ph.D.\, (Carnegie Mellon University) followed by a reception. \nPart of society’s return on the investment in our science is the help that we provide in making public policy decisions. The return depends\, in part\, on the state of our science and our ability to translate it into useful terms. It also depends on policymakers’ interest in what we have to say. After framing the general issues\, the talk will include the presenter’s experiences in two domains: climate change (beginning in the Carter administration) and pandemic disease (beginning with H5N1\, in the mid-2000s). The talk will conclude with reflections on what these engagements have done for society and for our science. \nAbout the Speaker\nBaruch Fischhoff is the Howard Heinz University Professor in the Department of Engineering and Public Policy and the Carnegie Mellon Institute for Security and Technology. He is a graduate of Wayne State University\, where he earned a B.S. in mathematics and psychology\, and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem\, where he earned a Ph.D. in\, psychology. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Medicine.

DESCRIPTION:Orthodox Christians are called\, first and foremost\, to love all—for “God is love.” But the reality for many lesbian\, gay\, bisexual\, transgender\, and queer Orthodox Christians today is that their relationship to the Church is defined not by love\, but by apathy\, exclusion\, and condemnation. We must\, as a faith\, choose love and compassion—to “love thy neighbor”— instead. This requires no change of faith\, but a fuller\, more compassionate understanding of what our faith in loving God truly requires of us. \nThe Church is at a crossroads. We offer this symposium in love and faith\, praying that the road we choose is the right one—the one that leads to God. \nWe invite you to a conversation about ministering to LGBTQ+ Christians. The afternoon includes a panel review of the recently published books Orthodox Tradition and Human Sexuality and Gender Essentialism and Orthodoxy: Beyond Male and Female\, and a discussion of the opportunities\, challenges\, and resources for ministry among LGBTQ+ faithful.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for the third International Agunah Summit—Divorce Settlement Abuse and Extortion in Jewish Law. \nAs any family law litigator can attest\, divorces can be extremely contentious. But when the marriage was created via an Orthodox Jewish wedding\, the conflict is magnified to its highest level. That is because Jewish law requires that an Orthodox Jewish wedding be terminated not only by civil law\, but also by a Jewish divorce\, called a Get. Without a Get\, the parties are not considered divorced—and the consequences\, especially for a woman\, are life-altering. \nFollowing the first Agunah Summit\, which highlighted the legal-religious solutions to this problem\, and the second Agunah Summit\, which dealt with various institutional aspects\, this third Agunah Summit will explore the dynamics created by the implementation of Jewish religious divorce laws in the fields of sociology\, economics\, law\, and ethics\, and address the broad influence of these dynamics not only on the Get-refused Agunah but on the divorce settlements of all Jewish women whose marriages are terminated under religious law. \nThis event is sponsored by Fordham Law School’s Institute On Religion\, Law and Lawyer’s Work\, the faculty of law at New York University\, and the Center for Jewish and Democratic Law at Bar Ilan University.

DESCRIPTION:The Humanitarian Blockchain Summit will bring technology experts\, scholars\, and humanitarian practitioners together for dynamic discussions about the future of blockchain technology in humanitarian operations and in pursuit of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. \nBlockchain technology holds great potential for improving these operations—whether it’s used to transfer cash to disaster victims\, coordinate the delivery of supplies\, streamline humanitarian financing\, or make humanitarian projects more gender-inclusive. \nThe summit is designed for those interested in using blockchain for tangible humanitarian impact. Breakout sessions will focus on overcoming challenges to using blockchain\, as well as identifying the best ways to develop humanitarian-friendly blockchain platforms\, among other topics. The sessions will also include collaborative exercises and presentations about how some organizations are using blockchain. \nThe goal of the event is for participants to recommend policies for using blockchain in specific humanitarian interventions.

DESCRIPTION:The Fordham Veterans Association and the Department of Communication and Media Studies presents “Almost Sunrise” \nAlmost Sunrise is the first film to introduce the emerging term “moral injury\,” sparking a national conversation\, connecting communities\, spotlighting alternative modalities for healing\, offering hopeful solutions for PTSD\, moral injury\, and breaking the stigma around mental health. \nThe event will host the filmmaker Michael Collins and Iraq veteran Tom Voss\, as well as Leslye Moore\, National Director of Welcome Home Troops and is also featured in the film. Following the film viewing\, there will be a panel discussion with Micheal\, Tom\, and Leslye; and Fordham student veterans. The panel will address topics such as moral injury\, post-traumatic stress\, and military-to-civilian transition. \nCoffee\, tea\, and soda will be served; this event is free and open to all interested (no affiliation to Fordham University necessary).

DESCRIPTION:The King’s College has partnered with Fordham’s Center for Ethics Education to discuss whether or not we are over-punishing violent offenders. \nNearly 2.3 million men and women are currently incarcerated in America’s jails and prisons\, 88% of which are in state prisons. According recent data\, approximately 53% of all state prisoners are in prison for violent offenses. Reducing prison populations in the future will require that we reconceptualize why and how we prosecute violence. \nJoin us at the Fordham University’s Lincoln Center Campus on Thursday\, October 12 to hear an exclusive conversation among America’s leading criminal justice professors—Douglas Husak\, Professor of Philosophy and Law at Rutgers University and Barry Latzer is Emeritus Professor of Criminal Justice at John Jay College of Criminal Justice\, CUNY—on the facts of the national prison population and new solutions for prosecuting and sentencing violent offenders.
