SUMMARY:Film Screening of Cabrini
DESCRIPTION:Join Campus Ministry\, the Center for Religion and Culture\, the Curran Center for American Catholic Studies\, and the Jesuit community at Fordham Rose Hill for a film screening of the movie Cabrini. The film depicts the life of a Catholic missionary sister from Italy named Francesca Cabrini\, who encounters resistance to her charity efforts in NYC. Cabrini explores the sexism and anti-Italian bigotry faced by Mother Cabrini and other immigrants in the United States—and in the Catholic Church itself—in the late 19th and early 20th century. Mother Cabrini died in 1917\, and in 1946\, she was canonized\, becoming the first American saint. In 1950\, she was named the Patroness of Immigrants.

SUMMARY:Peace in the Nuclear Age: Humanitarian Perspectives
DESCRIPTION:Come hear from Nobel Peace Prize-winning speakers from various NGOs and international governments talk about peace in the nuclear age. The Humanitarian Student Unions of Rose Hill and Lincoln Center and the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation (NAPF) are hosting a panel on the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons and how it affects the world we live in. There will also be speakers from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC)\, the UN Mission to Ireland\, PAX No Nukes\, and International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW). The ICRC and IPPNW are both recipients of the Nobel Peace Prize. Christian Ciobanu of the NAPF will chair. \nThere will be a Q&A with questions fielded from the audience and a small reception.

SUMMARY:Student Veteran Victory Bell Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:The Victory Bell Ceremony celebrates the prodigious accomplishments of Fordham’s 2019 graduating class of student veterans. This event is open to all graduating student veterans/dependents (and their families) who are eligible to walk in Fordham’s Commencement on Saturday\, May 18. All graduating student veterans will receive a Fordham Veterans’ Initiative Graduation Medallion\, with yellow ribbon\, that they can wear during Commencement. Doors will open at 3 p.m. and we will have a social hour at the Bronx Beer Hall following the ceremony. If you are unable to attend\, please fill out the registration page and your medallion will be mailed to you. \nThe Victory Bell\, or Nimitz Bell\, was given to the University in 1944 by Admiral Chester Nimitz as a commemoration for the lives lost in WWII and was first rung by President Truman in 1946. Originally the operating ship bell aboard the Japanese Warship Junyo\, the bell serves today as a symbol of Fordham pride and culture. For student veterans\, the Victory Bell is both a collegiate starting point and finish line. After student veteran orientation\, newly admitted student veterans are introduced to the Nimitz Bell for the first time when they  participate in the Bell Ringing Ceremony and embark on their journey into higher education—many of them being absent from a classroom for decades. Today\, the 2019 graduating class of student veterans return to the Victory Bell\, close an important chapter of their lives\, and celebrate a job well done. \nAll graduating student veterans will be given the opportunity to ring the historic Victory Bell and have their picture taken with their families by a professional photographer.

DESCRIPTION:“They Do Not Know It and Do Not Want to Know It”: Racial Ignorance\, James Baldwin\, and the Authenticity of Christian Ethics\nThe Rev. Bryan N. Massingale\, S.T.D.\nJames and Nancy Buckman Chair in Applied Christian Ethics \nWriting in the 1960s\, James Baldwin declared that a central obstacle to achieving racial justice was the racial majority’s willful and cultivated ignorance of the situation facing people of color. Yet this kind of “ignorance” has not been critically examined in Catholic moral theology. This lecture explains the conceptual and race-based obstacles that hindered this engagement and the social consequences of this omission. It will also detail how key concepts in Christian ethical reflection will have to be reconfigured by the faith community and its scholars if they are to answer Baldwin’s challenge and become an effective force for racial justice in the United States. \nA reception in the Keating Hall Rotunda immediately follows the lecture. \nRSVP online by Tuesday\, February 13\, 2018.

DESCRIPTION:Since 2008\, The Reid Family Writers of Color Reading Series has brought a procession of some of the most celebrated writers of color to Fordham.  Events have included readings\, master classes and panel discussions.  The English Department at Fordham is deeply grateful to the Reid Family for their generosity.\n\nRobin Coste Lewis is a Provost’s Fellow in Poetry and Visual Studies at the University of Southern California. In 2015 she published her stunning poetry debut\,Voyage of the Sable Venus. This first collection is one of surpassing imagination\, maturity\, and aesthetic dazzle. It was widely praised by critics and honored with the 2015 National Book Award for Poetry—the first poetry debut to do so since 1974.\n\nVoyage of the Sable Venus is a meditation on the black female figure through time. In the center of the collection is the title poem\, “Voyage of the Sable Venus\,” an amazing narrative made up entirely of titles of artworks from ancient times to the present—titles that feature or in some way comment on the black female figure in Western art. The collection presents a new understanding of biography and self and is a thrilling testament to the complexity of race—a full embrace of its pleasure and horror\, in equal parts.\n\nLewis is a Cave Canem fellow and a fellow of the Los Angeles Institute for the Humanities. She received her MFA in poetry from NYU\, and an MTS in Sanskrit and comparative religious literature from the Divinity School at Harvard University. A finalist for the Rita Dove Poetry Award\, she has published her work in various journals and anthologies\, including The Massachusetts Review\, Callaloo\, The Harvard Gay & Lesbian Review\, Transition: Women in Literary Arts\, VIDA\, Phantom Limb\, and Lambda Literary Review\, among others. She has taught at Wheaton College\, Hunter College\, Hampshire College\, and the NYU Low-Residency MFA in Paris. Lewis was born in Compton\, California; her family is from New Orleans.\n\nThe Reid events are made possible through the generosity of Kenneth and Frances K.
