SUMMARY:Undocumenting Abuse: Migration\, Power\, and the Production of Invisible Victims
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Susan B. Reynolds\, Ph.D.\, Winner of the 2024 New Scholar Essay Prize for Catholic Studies in the Americas. \nClergy sexual violence in immigrant communities is an understudied dimension of the abuse crisis in the Catholic Church. Yet records reveal how immigrant-serving parishes were regularly treated as dumping grounds for serially abusive clergy. There\, abusers targeted children from poor\, vulnerable\, and undocumented families\, silencing victims with threats of deportation and further violence. This lecture will call for a reorientation in the study of clergy sexual abuse toward these peripheries. Drawing on archival records from the 1960s to 1980s\, it will interrogate the complex politics of documentation at work in migrant abuse cases. It will further examine how a post-Vatican II theological and pastoral imagination of intimacy with the poor\, refracted through prisms of state\, ecclesial\, and clerical dominance\, helped to create conditions for the production of invisible victims.

SUMMARY:Yield Not: Hope and Communion in the Bronx’s Toughest Years
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a talk by journalist Eileen Markey. \nIn the darkest days of the New York City fiscal crisis and its aftermath in the 1970s\, as faith in cities faltered\, Bronx activists argued for the worth of urban neighborhoods and the value of people living in them. In a time of disinvestment\, arson\, and abandonment\, it was community organizing—often marshaled through Catholic parishes and drawing on religious narratives—that demonstrated an alternate vision for the future of the city: rebuilding neighborhoods that had been written off as beyond redemption. \nIn this lecture and discussion\, Eileen Markey\, writer in residence at the Center on Religion and Culture\, will draw on research for her forthcoming book about the Bronx people’s movement of the 1970s and 1980s. \nAbout the Speaker\nEileen Markey is an assistant professor of journalism at Lehman College of the City University of New York and a visiting scholar at the Bronx County Historical Society. Zagano has written and spoken on the role of women in the Roman Catholic Church and is an advocate for the ordination of women as deacons. Her writings have been translated into Indonesian\, Czech\, French\, Italian\, Portuguese\, and Spanish. She was appointed to Pope Francis’s first commission on the diaconate in 2016 and was a guest speaker at the Loyola Institute Trinity College Dublin’s seminar on synodality in 2023.

SUMMARY:'Ideas Are Debated; Reality Is Discerned': Pope Francis and Ignatian Discernment
DESCRIPTION:When asked in 2013 which aspect of Ignatian spirituality is most important to him as he does his work as pope\, Pope Francis answered without hesitation: discernment. Discernment has been a focus of Pope Francis’ appropriation of Ignatian spirituality going all the way back to his first years of formation during the early ’60s and has shaped his leadership in the church\, as provincial of Argentina’s Jesuits\, archbishop of Buenos Aires\, leader of the Latin American Church\, and finally as pope. In this lecture\, we explore how Pope Francis interprets the process of discernment and Ignatius’s famous Rules for Discernment of Spirits. Since it is possible and fruitful to look not only at how Pope Francis interprets the Spiritual Exercises but at how they “interpret” him\, we will also examine how his understanding of discernment provides a key to understanding how he approaches the urgent task of addressing the church’s most pressing challenges in his Petrine ministry.

SUMMARY:Gregory K. Hillis Talks Thomas Merton\, and What His Affair with a Nurse Taught Him About Love and Humility
DESCRIPTION:We learned from Thomas Merton’s private journals—published 25 years after his death—of an affair Merton had in the summer of 1966 with a nurse (“M”) who cared for him after a medical procedure. If we take seriously Merton’s status and contributions as a Catholic thinker\, then Merton’s description of his relationship with “M” needs to be considered. And from Merton’s account\, we not only get a sense of his own shortcomings\, but we see him honestly grappling with those shortcomings. Merton wrestled with his own failures and did so in journals he knew would be published without restrictions. Merton’s unwillingness to be known apart from his foibles\, apart from the complexity of who he was as a human being striving to do God’s will\, manifests a level of humility that merits recognition. \nThis lecture will delve into Merton’s account of his relationship with “M\,” not to defend this relationship or to give it a sympathetic treatment\, but rather to explore what Merton’s account tells us about how he viewed himself\, his relationship with God\, and his relationship with his fellow monks in light of this affair.

SUMMARY:Reading Religion in Popular Culture
DESCRIPTION:A conversation with Margaret Lyons\, television critic and writer for The New York Times “Watching” section. Ms. Lyons majored in religious studies at the University of Chicago\, and she has since gone on to carve out a funny\, socially engaged\, and increasingly influential voice in arts and entertainment journalism. She previously worked at New York Magazine’s Vulture\, Entertainment Weekly\, Time Out Chicago\, and Chicagoist\, and her work has appeared in Slate\, Elle\, Glamour\, and other publications. Kathryn Reklis\, Assistant Professor of Theology at Fordham\, will moderate a conversation with Ms. Lyons about how she got into journalism\, how her background in theology and religious studies has shaped her distinctive perspective on popular culture\, and how writing about television has emerged as a significant medium of cultural commentary and critique.
