Discernment has been a focus of Pope Francis’ appropriation of Ignatian spirituality going all the way back to his first years of formation during the early ’60s and has shaped his leadership in the church\, as provincial of Argentina’s Jesuits\, archbishop of Buenos Aires\, leader of the Latin American Church\, and finally as pope. In this lecture\, we explore how Pope Francis interprets the process of discernment and Ignatius’s famous Rules for Discernment of Spirits. Since it is possible and fruitful to look not only at how Pope Francis interprets the Spiritual Exercises but at how they “interpret” him\, we will also examine how his understanding of discernment provides a key to understanding how he approaches the urgent task of addressing the church’s most pressing challenges in his Petrine ministry. Central American Proxy Wars and the Battle for Catholic Identity DESCRIPTION:Join us for a lecture presented by Theresa Keeley\, Ph.D.\, University of Louisville. \nMuch of today’s conversation about U.S. Catholics and politics centers on so-called “culture war” issues\, but in the 1970s and 1980s\, Catholics sparred over foreign policy in Central America. Behind the political debate was one about the meaning of Catholic identity. This event brings together one of the foremost researchers on clerical sexual abuse in the United States\, a Jesuit who is also a survivor of clerical sexual abuse and whose research is directed at the crisis\, two well-known writers who are survivors and who have deep ties to Jesuit educational institutions\, including Fordham\, and the director of a major Truth and Healing initiative at a Jesuit-sponsored high school for Native American students. \nFrom their own perspectives\, each member of this group will reflect on the long and recent history of the sexual abuse crisis. The university began in the Middle Ages as an extension of Catholic monasticism\, an intellectual world separate and apart from the practice of everyday life. In many ways\, advanced scholarship retains something of its original monastic flavor. Academics are taught to keep a respectable distance from their subjects\, to aim for objectivity\, to cultivate detachment. But what are we missing when we constrain scholarship within these normative dimensions? What else might we learn—about the past\, about others\, about even ourselves—if we let down our guard and sidle up close to and alongside our subjects of study? \nIn dialogue with her most recent work on Catholic narratives of sickness and disability in early modern French North America\, Mary Corley Dunn\, Ph.D.\, University of St. Louis\, articulates a vision for a more humane kind of scholarship beyond the ivory tower—a kind of scholarship that sits at the juncture of the personal and the professional\, lived experience and archival record\, scholarly practice and everyday life. \nVisit the website to learn more about the Curran Center. In many ways\, advanced scholarship retains something of its original monastic flavor. Academics are taught to keep a respectable distance from their subjects\, to aim for objectivity\, to cultivate detachment. But what are we missing when we constrain scholarship within these normative dimensions? \nIn dialogue with her most recent work on Catholic narratives of sickness and disability in early modern French North America\, Mary Corey Dunn\, Ph.D.\, University of St. Louis\, articulates a vision for a more humane kind of scholarship beyond the ivory tower: one that sits at the juncture of the personal and the professional\, lived experience and archival record\, scholarly practice and everyday life. \nThis will be an in-person presentation streamed live and recorded. In-person attendance is restricted to vaccinated Fordham community members; registration is required for all attendees. In this talk\, Williams will trace the lives\, labors\, and struggles of African American Catholic women and girls from their earliest appearance in the historical record in 16th-century Spanish Florida to the present day. Drawing upon a host of previously ignored sources\, including archival records and oral history\, Williams will demonstrate why any narrative of the U.S. Catholic experience that marginalizes or ignores Black women and girls is woefully incomplete—and perhaps even intentionally insincere. Their book\, The Long Loneliness in Baltimore\, offers a view of the city few people have seen\, including many who have lived there. In addition to providing a historical overview\, the book presents poignant vignettes\, moments of revelation that illuminate the life of the neighborhood and the plight of the poor—not just the poor of Baltimore\, but those across our country who struggle to survive in the merciless environment of the modern American city.
