Juneteenth commemorates June 19\, 1865\, when the announcement of General Order No. 3 by Union Army General Gordon Granger proclaimed African Americans’ freedom from slavery in the state of Texas\, roughly two months after the official end of the Civil War.\nAccording to our featured guest\, historian Allison Dorsey\, Ph.D.\, the true value of Juneteenth lies not in the idea of the “celebration” of freedom\, but in the way the story of Juneteenth captures the tension between Black freedom dreams and the violent actions by white citizens\, bolstered by the state\, to deny those dreams. The Juneteenth holiday also offers everyone an opportunity to learn about Black hopes and aspirations—and equally important—Black actions to secure liberty during Reconstruction\, and throughout the 160 years since President Abraham Lincoln first issued the Emancipation Proclamation.\nJoin the lecture via Zoom.\nAbout the Speaker\nDorsey is professor emerita of history at Swarthmore College\, where her research and teaching interests include the history of African Americans\, the 20th-century Civil Rights Movement\, African American film\, and food history. She is the author of numerous publications\, including To Build Our Lives Together: Community Formation in Black Atlanta\, 1875-1906 (University of Georgia Press\, 2007)\, “The great cry of our people is land! Black Settlement and Community Development on Ossabaw Island\, Georgia\, 1865-1900\,” published in African American Life in the Georgia Lowcountry: The Atlantic World and the Gullah Geechee (University of Georgia Press\,2010)\, and “We’ve Taken Old Gods and Given Them New Names’: The Spirit of Sankofa in Daughters of the Dust\,” published in Writing History with Lightening: Cinematic Representations of Nineteenth Century America (Louisiana State University Press\, 2019).\nDorsey was also founding director of the Swarthmore Summer Scholars Program (S3P) from 2014 to 2017\, and has returned to research on black freedmen along the Georgia seacoast. This panel of leading thinkers will discuss how media\, educators\, religious institutions\, and governments can fight Holocaust denial and deepen understanding of the genocide. What is the role of allies? \nThe discussion will begin with a screening of Fred de Sam Lazaro’s 2022 PBS NewsHour segment on the children’s book Nicky & Vera: A Quiet Hero of the Holocaust and the Children He Rescued. Written and illustrated by Peter Sís\, it tells the story of Nicholas Winton\, the “British Schindler\,” who helped 669 children escape Czechoslovakia just before Nazi occupation. \nThe panelists will delve into the conditions that allowed the ripening and spread of antisemitism in the years leading up to the Holocaust\, and they will bring home the relevance of those circumstances today. \nModerators \n\nFred de Sam Lazaro\, correspondent/director\, The Under-Told Stories Project\nPeter Osnos\, founder\, PublicAffairs Books\n\nPanelists \n\nJudy Woodruff\, anchor\, PBS NewsHour\nMagda Teter\, Shvidler Chair in Judaic Studies\, Fordham University\nJames Loeffler\, Jay Berkowitz Professor of Jewish History\, University of Virginia\nLinda Kinstler\, author\, Come to This Court and Cry: How the Holocaust Ends\n\nSpecial Guest: Eva Paddock\, Educator and One of “Winton’s Children” Rescued from Czechoslovakia on the Eve of World War II \nA reception will follow the discussion at 7 p.m. URL:https://now.fordham.edu/event/remembering-talking-about-the-holocaust-in-the-21st-century/ LOCATION:McNally Amphitheatre\, 140 West 62nd Street\, New York\, NY\, 10023\, United States CATEGORIES:Cultural,Lectures,Receptions GEO:40.7713958;-73.9844894 X-APPLE-STRUCTURED-LOCATION;VALUE=URI;X-ADDRESS=McNally Amphitheatre 140 West 62nd Street New York NY 10023 United States;X-APPLE-RADIUS=500;X-TITLE=140 West 62nd Street:geo:-73.9844894,40.7713958 END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=America/New_York:20220425T110000 DTEND;TZID=America/New_York:20220425T130000 DTSTAMP:20250508T222247 CREATED:20220322T211109Z LAST-MODIFIED:20220322T211109Z UID:10004695-1650884400-1650891600@now.fordham.edu SUMMARY:Fordham Research Day Celebration DESCRIPTION:Every year\, Fordham recognizes faculty research at Research Day\, an in-person event at Fordham Law. This panel will consider a variety of issues involving student and faculty speech\, including the questions below. Please join us for this important panel! \nMany universities regulate student hateful or offensive speech\, but in what way? What associational rights should students have on campus\, such as the formation of student groups with university recognition\, and physical spaces on campus for group members to meet without having to be open to non-members? What limits\, if any\, should there be on student groups inviting outside speakers? May universities insist that faculty speak (or not speak) in certain ways in the classroom? That faculty include (or not include) certain materials in the curriculum? How should and may universities respond to faculty who speak to a public audience outside of their official campus teaching duties (say\, on Twitter) but to another audience on campus\, particularly when teaching? Specifically: May universities discipline faculty for egregious speech on social media when the faculty member is not repeating such speech with students? \nFeatured Speakers \n\nSigal Ben-Porath\, University of Pennsylvania\nRadhika Sainath\, Palestine Legal\nDennis Tyler\, Fordham University\nRafael Zapata\, Fordham University\nModerator: Abner Greene\, professor\, Fordham Law URL:https://now.fordham.edu/event/academic-discourse-and-freedom-of-expression-on-campus/ LOCATION:Keating Third Auditorium\, 441 East Fordham Road\, Bronx\, NY\, 10458\, United States CATEGORIES:Lectures ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/jpeg:https://now.fordham.edu/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/Speech-Acts-logo-2-1.jpg ORGANIZER;CN="Office of the Provost":MAILTO:provost@fordham.edu GEO:40.8612275;-73.8892354 X-APPLE-STRUCTURED-LOCATION;VALUE=URI;X-ADDRESS=Keating Third Auditorium 441 East Fordham Road Bronx NY 10458 United States;X-APPLE-RADIUS=500;X-TITLE=441 East Fordham Road:geo:-73.8892354,40.8612275 END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=America/New_York:20220324T170000 DTEND;TZID=America/New_York:20220324T183000 DTSTAMP:20250508T222247 CREATED:20220315T173000Z LAST-MODIFIED:20220315T173000Z UID:10004682-1648141200-1648146600@now.fordham.edu SUMMARY:Epistemic Bubbles and Echo Chambers: The Epistemic and Political Impacts of Modern Technology DESCRIPTION:How have social media and online discourse influenced our ability to understand the world around us? But is the heart of the problem also spiritual and religious? Are we witnessing a kind of “neo-Puritanism” that has deep roots in U.S. culture? And can religious traditions point a way toward a solution? Can we recover the practices of repentance\, forgiveness\, and redemption that are central to the great spiritual teachings? \nThis panel of distinguished writers and scholars examines the state of America’s soul and remedies for our current predicament. \nPanelists \n\nThe Rev. The First Amendment limits “state action”—what the government may and may not do—but not private action. In the context of increasing concentration of private speech power\, such as powerful social media platforms that are not governed by the First Amendment\, this panel discussion will consider defenses for and critiques of the state action doctrine\, along with comparative approaches. The discussion will also consider whether our robust constitutional free speech protections go too far in some instances\, failing to properly consider certain harms caused by speech. \nFeatured Speakers\nMary Anne Franks\, University of Miami\nGenevieve Lakier\, University of Chicago\nJulie Suk\, Fordham University\nNelson Tebbe\, Cornell University \nModerator\nAbner Greene\, Fordham University URL:https://now.fordham.edu/event/the-promise-and-limits-of-our-first-amendment/ LOCATION:Zoom CATEGORIES:Lectures ORGANIZER;CN="Office of the Provost":MAILTO:provost@fordham.edu END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
