Their films brought the dramatic\, poignant and comic stories of migrants to diverse audiences\, through images that provoked feeling among people of every culture. \nThe Global Migration Film Festival (GMFF) features films and documentaries that capture the promise and challenges of migration\, and the unique contributions that migrants make to their new communities. The goal of the festival is to pave the way for greater discussion around one of the greatest phenomena of our time. \nIn celebration of the GMFF\, IOM-UN Migration and Fordham University will hold a discussion on the media landscape and migration and screen films from the festival’s slate. From films to tweets\, newspapers\, and television shows\, sources for consumption of media are plentiful today. The discussions alongside the film festival will examine the myriad ways the media reports on\, discusses\, and portrays migration and migrants. Filmmaker and GMFF International jury member Idil Ibrahim will screen and hold a Q&A on her film Sega. As a result\, some of them decided to take longer and more dangerous routes\, bypassing controls by security forces. And putting in a greater risk the life of their passengers. \nTrapped inside ghettos\, abused and abandoned in remote areas\, migrants in the North of Niger face dramatic choices. As a traditional Tuareg greeting says\, they ask for “news from the road.” \nIn early 2017\, the International Organization for Migrations responded by launching a search and rescue activity to come and assist those who are abandoned in the Sahara\, in a huge and insecure area. While community mobilizers from the organization provide migrants with possible answers\, essentials to navigate such a critical moment for their future. And to imagine a different future for the whole region of Agadez. \nThe Institute of International Humanitarian Affairs at Fordham University will host this film screening followed by a panel discussion with: \nAlberto Preato\, IOM Niger Program Manager and IIHA Humanitarian Design Fellow at Fordham University\nKieran Gorman-Best\, IOM Senior Policy and Liaison Oficer\nIsaie Dougon\, PhD\, Professor of French and Humanitarian Affairs at Fordham University URL:https://now.fordham.edu/event/issalam-taret-news-road-iom-niger-film-screening-panel/ LOCATION:McMahon 109\, McMahon Hall\, 113 West 60th Street\, Lincoln Center Campus\, New York\, NY\, 10023\, United States ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/jpeg:https://now.fordham.edu/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/Issalam-Taret-Film-FB-Event.jpg ORGANIZER;CN="Institute of International Humanitarian Affairs":MAILTO:iiha@fordham.edu GEO:40.7708109;-73.9851512 X-APPLE-STRUCTURED-LOCATION;VALUE=URI;X-ADDRESS=McMahon 109 McMahon Hall 113 West 60th Street Lincoln Center Campus New York NY 10023 United States;X-APPLE-RADIUS=500;X-TITLE=McMahon Hall\, 113 West 60th Street\, Lincoln Center Campus:geo:-73.9851512,40.7708109 END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=America/New_York:20171109T170000 DTEND;TZID=America/New_York:20171109T190000 DTSTAMP:20250512T225708 CREATED:20171011T192607Z LAST-MODIFIED:20171011T192607Z UID:10006109-1510246800-1510254000@now.fordham.edu SUMMARY:Film Screening and Panel Discussion: Syria's Disappeared DESCRIPTION:Syria’s Disappeared tells the hidden story of tens of thousands of men\, women and children disappeared by the regime of President Bashar al Assad into a network of clandestine detention centers.
