In this presentation\, Duke will describe ambitious literacy education\, with a particular focus on examples from classrooms serving large numbers of students from low-SES backgrounds. Project-based learning will be offered as one example of an (at least potentially) ambitious approach to developing literacy. \nAbout Nell Duke\nNell K. Duke is a professor in literacy\, language\, and culture and in the combined program in education and psychology at the University of Michigan. Duke’s work focuses on early literacy development\, particularly among children living in poverty. She has served as co-principal investigator of projects funded by the Institute of Education Sciences\, the National Science Foundation\, the Spencer Foundation\, and the George Lucas Educational Foundation\, among other organizations. In 2014\, Duke was awarded the P. David Pearson Scholarly Influence Award from the Literacy Research Association. She has also received awards from the American Educational Research Association\, the International Reading Association\, and the National Council of Teachers of English. Duke’s most recent book is Inside Information: Developing Powerful Readers and Writers of Informational Text through Project-based Instruction. She currently serves as editor of The Research-Informed Classroom book series and co-editor of the Not This\, But That book series. Duke has a strong interest in improving the quality of educational research training in the U.S. Her Twitter handle is @nellkduke. \nMore information. \nFor more information\, contact Kelly Milnes at 212-636-6409 or kmilnes@fordham.edu. D’Onofrio\, PhD\, Clinical Professor & Director of the Psychological Services Institute at Fordham University. \nDr. D’Onofrio will be speaking on Being a Kid in the 21st Century: How the Pressures of Contemporary Life Can Lead to Disconnection\, Despair\, and Violence. \nBeing a kid in 2017 is vastly different from life just a few short decades ago. Parental stress\, materialism\, the ubiquity and influence of technology\, pressure to achieve\, perfectionism\, uncertainly about the future\, and other toxic cultural influences are creating a generation of disconnected and unhappy kids. Some of these kids are not only disconnected from others but from themselves and occasionally offer vague complaints of “something missing inside.” They lack enthusiasm and a sense of purpose and\, when despair sets in\, their depression\, anxiety\, and anger can turn to violence toward others or toward oneself through self-injury or suicide. In this presentation\, we will explore how the contemporary landscape of childhood can cultivate despair in vulnerable children and how school personnel can identify problems and compassionately engage these children to help transform their sense of emptiness to one of hope.
