It also includes a section on how these exotic investments performed relative to both traditional and alternative investments\, such as hedge funds\, both before and after the spring 2020 market crash. \nDigital copies of Exotic Alternative Investments will be raffled off to attendees and have been donated by Alex Wright\, GABELLI ’00. \nAgenda\n12 p.m.: Welcome Remarks and Speaker Introduction: Donna Rapaccioli\, dean of the Gabelli School of Business \n12:08 p.m.: Fireside Chat: Kevin R. After more than a decade working for world-class brands\, he began the award-winning studio Design Quadrant and\, more recently\, launched the NYC-based\, sustainable luxury brand 1 Atelier. His extension into academia nearly a decade ago was inspired by a desire to better knit the changing demands of industry to curricula. \nHis broad-spectrum experience has followed the pulse of change in the fashion industry\, where his work has been instrumental in the success of companies for more than 15 years\, at a roster including Chanel\, Calvin Klein\, Coach\, and many others. He’s a culture creator—whether shaping start-ups for long-term growth or short-term sale—or leveraging his experience to redirect global brands toward more sustainable and regenerative futures. In his latest venture\, Zambrelli joins his former colleagues from the Fair Fashion Center in the formation of an ESG retail practice within Accenture\, the multinational professional services company\, shaping strategy\, digital technology\, and operations through the lens of sustainability and a more responsible future. \nA regular face in digital\, broadcast\, and print media\, and on panels discussing responsible business and the acceleration of ESG\, his latest work focuses on guiding industries in disruption toward a more data-driven\, equitable\, and regenerative future. This presentation will assess Gould’s skills as a corporate executive following his distressed investment in\, and subsequent control of\, the Union Pacific Railroad (UP). The UP was in distress due to volatility emanating from the infamous financial panic of 1873. Gould executed his turnaround in an economy devoid of monetary stimulus\, without a government bailout\, and under pressure from the government to pay back the firm’s public loans. Gould employed many modern techniques in his turnaround that are relevant to 21st-century executives. His example also serves as an important historical reminder that successful executives do not require government bailouts. \nAgenda\n12 p.m.: Welcome Remarks: Donna Rapaccioli\, dean of the Gabelli School of Business \n12:05 p.m.: Speaker Introduction: David Cowen\, president and CEO of the Museum of American\nFinance \n12:08 p.m.: Discussion: Joseph Calandro Jr. \n12:45 p.m.: Audience Q&A \n1 p.m.: Closing Remarks: David Cowen \nAbout the Speaker\nCalandro Jr. is a managing director of a global consulting firm and a fellow of the Gabelli Center for Global Security Analysis. Cunningham\, author of Quality Shareholders: How the Best Managers Attract and Keep Them\, and Astrid Doerner\, a financial correspondent. Anyone can buy stock in a public company\, but not all shareholders are equally committed to a company’s long-term success. In an increasingly fragmented financial world\, shareholders’ attitudes toward the companies in which they invest vary widely\, from time horizon to conviction. Faced with indexers\, short-term traders\, and activists\, it is more important than ever for businesses to ensure that their shareholders are dedicated to their missions. Today’s companies need “quality shareholders\,” as Warren Buffett called those who “load up and stick around\,” or buy large stakes and hold for long periods. \nIn Quality Shareholders\, Cunningham provides an expert guide to the benefits of attracting and keeping quality shareholders. He demonstrates that a high density of dedicated\, long-term shareholders results in numerous comparative and competitive advantages for companies and their managers\, including a longer runway to execute business strategy and a loyal cohort against adversity. \nDigital copies of Quality Shareholders: How the Best Managers Attract and Keep Them will be raffled off to attendees. \nAgenda\n12 p.m.: Welcome Remarks: Donna Rapaccioli\, dean of the Gabelli School of Business \n12:05 p.m.: Speaker Introduction: David Cowen\, president/CEO of the Museum of American Finance \n12:08 p.m.: Discussion: Astrid Doerner and Lawrence Cunningham \n12:45 p.m.: Audience Q&A \n1:00 p.m.: Closing Remarks: David Cowen \nAbout the Speakers\nCunningham is an author\, lecturer\, professor\, public company director\, and consultant on corporate governance. In Creating Strategic Value\, Calandro Jr. explores how the core ideas and methods of value investing can be profitably applied to corporate strategy and management. He builds from an analysis of traditional value investing concepts to their strategic applications. Calandro Jr. surveys value investing’s past\, present\, and future\, drawing on influential texts\, from Graham and Dodd’s time-tested works to more recent studies\, to reveal potent managerial lessons. \nIn his book\, Calandro Jr. explains the theoretical aspects of value investing-consistent approaches to corporate strategy and management\, and details how they can be successfully employed through practical case studies that demonstrate value realization in action. He analyzes the applicability of key ideas\, such as the margin-of-safety principle to corporate strategy in a wide range of areas beyond stocks and bonds\, highlighting the importance of an “information advantage”—knowing something that a firm’s competitors either do not know or choose to ignore—and explaining how corporate managers can apply this key value-investing differentiator. Offering expert insight into the use of time-tested value investing principles in new fields\, Creating Strategic Value is an important book for corporate strategy and management practitioners at all levels\, as well as for students and researchers. \nDigital copies of Creating Strategic Value: Applying Value Investing Principles to Corporate Management will be raffled off to attendees. \nAgenda\n12 p.m.: Welcome Remarks: Donna Rapaccioli\, dean of the Gabelli School of Business \n12:05 p.m.: Speaker Introduction: James Kelly\, Director\, Gabelli Center for Global Security Analysis \n12:08 p.m.: Discussion: Joseph Calandro Jr. \n12:45 p.m.: Audience Q&A \n1 p.m.: Closing Remarks: Donna Rapaccioli \nAbout the Speaker\nCalandro Jr. is a managing director of a global consulting firm and a fellow of the Gabelli Center for Global Security Analysis. As we all face COVID-19\, it is clear that both the business world and business schools will emerge from this pandemic with a new normal. But what will that new normal look like? How do we prepare students for jobs that we don’t yet know will exist? The answer is preparing for what we do know while educating students to be agile\, sustainable thinkers and doers who are able to quickly adapt to changing environments and needs. \nThe Gabelli School of Business is celebrating its centennial in 2020. In recognition of this monumental occasion\, it is virtually hosting a Centennial Celebration Conference on the Future of Business Education from Fordham University’s London Centre\, a focal point for strengthening and growing academic and professional relationships in the United Kingdom and Europe\, enhancing student experiences\, growing collaborative research\, and promoting a sustainable workforce. \nThe conference will explore how the future of business education can prepare students for the post-pandemic workforce by examining the issues hiring managers face when searching for talent\, analyzing what skills are desirable for graduates to have\, and discussing innovative teaching opportunities that can prepare students for success. We will also explore the importance of creating engaging partnerships with organizations that educate future leaders.
