DESCRIPTION:Join us for a Council on Foreign Relations Academic Conference Call with Ebenezer Obadare\, a Douglas Dillon Senior Fellow for Africa Studies at the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR). Before joining CFR\, he was a professor of sociology at the University of Kansas\, Lawrence. He is also a senior fellow at the New York University School of Professional Studies Center for Global Affairs\, as well as a fellow at the University of South Africa’s Institute of Theology. \nObadare was a Ralf Dahrendorf Scholar and Ford Foundation International Scholar at the London School of Economics and Political Science where he completed his Ph.D. in social policy in 2005. He holds a B.A. in history and an MS.c. in international relations from the Obafemi Awolowo University\, Ile-Ife\, Nigeria. \nObadare was a political reporter for The News and TEMPO magazines from 1993 to 1995\, and a lecturer in international relations at the Obafemi Awolowo University from 1995 to 2001. His primary areas of interest are civil society and the state\, and religion and politics in Africa. \nHe is the author and editor of numerous books\, including Christianity\, Sexuality and Citizenship in Africa (2019)\, Pentecostal Republic: Religion and the Struggle for State Power in Nigeria (2018)\, Governance and the Crisis of Rule in Contemporary Africa: Leadership in Transformation (2016)\, Humor\, Silence\, and Civil Society in Nigeria (2016)\, The Handbook of Civil Society in Africa (2014)\, Civic Agency in Africa: Arts of Resistance in the 21st Century (2014)\, Democracy and Prebendalism in Nigeria: Critical Interpretations (2013)\, and Nigeria at Fifty: The Nation in Narration (2011). \nObadare’s essays have appeared in the leading Africanist and disciplinary journals\, including the Review of African Political Economy (ROAPE)\, African Affairs\, Politique Africaine\, Journal of Civil Society\, Democratization\, Patterns of Prejudice\, Africa Development\, Africa\, Critical African Studies\, Development in Practice\, Journal of Modern African Studies\, Journal of Contemporary African Studies\, Interkulturelle Theologie\, and Journal of Church and State. \nHis forthcoming book from the University of Notre Dame Press is titled Pastoral Power\, Clerical State: Pentecostalism\, Gender\, and Sexuality in Nigeria. He is the editor of Journal of Modern African Studies and contributing editor of Current History.

SUMMARY:The JMI Story in Moldova:  A Case Study
DESCRIPTION:Chris Hardy is the director of programs and partnerships for Justice and Mercy International\, where he has served for three and a half years. He is responsible for the oversight of international programming and staff\, as well as the development of partnerships with organizations and churches around the world. Hardy is an ordained minister and\, prior to joining JMI\, he served for 30 years in a local church. He holds a B.A. in psychology from Berry College\, an M.A. in counseling from the Church of God Theological Seminary\, and an M.Div. and D.Min. from United Theological Seminary. He has been married for 29 years\, and he and his wife have two adult children. His passion is to serve the most vulnerable around the world. \nJustice and Mercy International is a faith-based\, nonprofit established in 2008 whose mission is to make justice personal for the poor\, the orphaned\, and the forgotten. JMI works primarily in Moldova in Eastern Europe and in the Amazon region of Brazil. JMI’s missional strategy is to work through local national\, indigenous leaders to accomplish goals\, to work through the local church to minister to the needs of their villages and cities\, to empower the people served\, rather than enable them\, and to make a deep\, long-term commitment to each country or region where JMI works. JMI’s programs include vulnerable child\, teen\, and family development and care\, training and equipping\, missions mobilization\, and crisis care.

SUMMARY:IPED CFR Series: Global Climate Policy
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a Council on Foreign Relations Academic Conference Call with Jody Freeman\, the Archibald Cox Professor of Law at Harvard Law School and a leading scholar of administrative law and environmental law. She is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences\, a fellow of the American College of Environmental Lawyers\, and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. Freeman served as counselor for energy and climate change during President Barack Obama’s administration\, from 2009 to 2010. \nProfessor Freeman has written extensively about climate change\, environmental regulation\, and executive power. She is also known for her early work on “collaborative governance\,” which helped to establish a field focused on public-private approaches to regulatory problems. She has served as a member of the Administrative Conference of the United States\, an expert body that advises the federal government on how to improve the regulatory and administrative process. At Harvard Law School\, she is the founding director of the Environmental and Energy Law program\, a pioneering research center on climate and energy policy. She also established the law school’s first environmental law clinic. \nFreeman has been recognized as the second-most-cited scholar in public law in the nation. Her book\, Global Climate Change and U.S. Law (co-edited with Michael Gerrard)\, was published in 2015\, and she has produced several other books on topics ranging from market mechanisms of environmental regulation to privatization of government functions. She is widely published in leading American law reviews and co-authors a leading casebook in administrative law. A volume of her administrative law articles was published in Chinese in 2010. \nWhile in the White House\, Freeman was the architect of the president’s historic agreement with the auto industry to double fuel efficiency standards and set the first federal greenhouse gas standards\, which launched the Obama administration’s climate program under the Clean Air Act. She also contributed to a host of initiatives on renewable energy\, energy efficiency\, transmission policy\, and oil and gas drilling\, as well as the administration’s effort to pass legislation placing a market-based cap on carbon. After leaving the administration\, she served as an independent consultant to the president’s bipartisan commission on the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico\, advising the commission on structural reforms at the Department of the Interior. \nIn addition to her duties at Harvard Law School\, Freeman is an independent director of ConocoPhillips\, where she chairs the Public Policy Committee and serves on the Directors’ Affairs and Executive committees. She also serves on the Advisory Council of the Electric Power Research Institute\, advising the electricity industry on technology gaps and broader social needs that would benefit from pioneering research. \nProfessor Freeman consults regularly for government and nongovernmental parties\, advising on litigation and regulatory strategy. She has lectured broadly around the world\, including at the Nobel Institute\, and in Asia and Europe. She can be heard regularly on NPR and on various podcasts on public affairs\, has appeared on MSNBC and CNN\, and has written for The New York Times\, Wall Street Journal\, Guardian\, Los Angeles Times\, Politico\, Vox\, and Foreign Affairs.

DESCRIPTION:Shaun Johnson is the associate director of Fordham Foundry and co-director of Tachyon\, ConsenSys Ventures’ web3 startup accelerator. Previously\, Johnson was an entrepreneur in residence (EIR) at Georgetown University\, an associate at Techstars\, senior consultant at Booz Allen Hamilton\, and program analyst at the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics. He also serves on the boards of the New York Tech Alliance and NYC Innovation Collective. \nJohnson has extensive experience in technology and global tech and VC/investing markets. Through his efforts to develop global startup ecosystems\, especially at the Startup Institute\, Techstars\, The World Bank\, and various universities\, Johnson has helped hundreds of founders\, startups\, investors\, accelerators\, and governments/government institutions. He has supported entrepreneurs worldwide and helped to build a global network of business incubators and innovation hubs for technology\, business\, and digital economy; connected entrepreneurs with the knowledge\, funding\, and markets they need to grow their business; and published educational resources on such topics as crowdfunding\, angel investing\, and business incubator management in various markets. \nJohnson double majored in computer science and sociology at Georgetown University and graduated from Johns Hopkins University with a Master of Science in information systems and leadership development

Come hear prevailing theories on this issue and learn about the realities of trying to bridge the wealth gap. \nGiacomo Santangelo\, Ph.D.\, is a senior lecturer in the Department of Economics\, as well as the director of the International Political Economy Program (IPED) at Fordham University. He is an economist with training in quantitative and qualitative research and analysis with more than 20 years of teaching experience at various universities in the New York City area. Courses taught include Statistics and Statistical Decision-Making\, Applied Econometrics\, Microeconomics\, Macroeconomics\, International Economics\, Development Economics\, Environmental Economics\, Financial Economics\, Money and Banking\, Corporate Finance\, Public Finance\, Comparative Economic Systems\, Economics at the Movies\, and Sports Economics. \nAbout the Speaker\nHe earned his Ph.D. and Master of Arts in economics from Fordham University\, as well as a Bachelor of Science in economics from Seton Hall University. A frequent media contributor\, Santangelo has been seen on NBC\, CBS\, and Fox News\, as well as in U.S. News and World Report\, Forbes\, Monster.com\, and Fortune. In 2016\, he gave a TED talk on the unifying theory of all Disney animated films\, and in 2020 he published Macroeconomics: Big Things Have Small Beginnings\, a macroeconomics textbook geared toward the Global Business Honors class he teaches at the Gabelli School of Business at Fordham. DESCRIPTION:Grace Shen is an associate professor of history and director of graduate studies in the history department. Her work centers on questions of identity and aspirations of modernity\, change\, and self-fulfillment in late-19th to late-20th century China. As a science historian\, she has primarily explored this through the lens of knowledge production. Her first book\, Unearthing the Nation: Modern Geology and National Identity in Republican China\, traces the complex (and often surprising) ways that interactions with “modern science” helped Chinese articulate what they wanted\, how they saw themselves\, who they wanted to be\, and why. Her present book project\, Raising the Nation\, examines technologies of infant and child care to probe the ways that choices about children shaped China’s understanding of its place in the modern world and the potential of its nation-building project.
