Two early works shown here were the first samples of stained-glass designs for modern Ukrainian synagogues\, which set a new trend. \nThe first of them\, stained-glass windows for the Kharkiv Choral Synagogue (1995)\, is on the theme of Jewish holidays. The second project—an ensemble of stained-glass windows for the Kyiv synagogue in Podil (2002)—focuses on the holy places of the land of Israel and the tribes of Israel. The third work\, Jerusalem and the Tribes of Israel\, is a part of the original design of the Torah Ark itself in the Galitska synagogue in Kyiv (2005). In Kotlyar’s artistic vision\, the stained-glass window projects the light\, turns the metaphysical into the physical\, materializes the speculative image\, and\, ultimately\, fills the prayer with color and light. \nThis exhibition is made possible thanks to the generosity of Fordham Trustee Henry S. Miller\, Bruce Beal\, Eugene Shvidler\, GABELLI ’92\, and anonymous donors to the Center for Jewish Studies at Fordham. It is the nature of the venture-capital game that most attempts at discovery fail; very few succeed\, and on such a scale that they more than make up for everything else. That extreme ratio of success and failure is the power law that drives the VC business\, all of Silicon Valley\, the wider tech sector\, and\, by extension\, the world. \nIn The Power Law\, Sebastian Mallaby has parlayed unprecedented access to the most celebrated venture capitalists of all time—the key figures at Sequoia\, Kleiner Perkins\, Accel\, Benchmark\, and Andreessen Horowitz\, as well as such Chinese partnerships as Qiming and Capital Today—into a riveting blend of storytelling and analysis that unfurls the history of tech incubation\, in the valley and ultimately worldwide. We learn the unvarnished truth\, often for the first time\, about some of the most iconic triumphs and infamous disasters in valley history\, from the comedy of errors at the birth of Apple to the avalanche of venture money that fostered hubris at WeWork and Uber. \nAgenda \n12 p.m.: Welcome Remarks: James Kelly\, director\, Gabelli Center for Global Security Analysis OR Sris Chatterjee\, chair\, Gabelli Center for Global Security Analysis \n12:03 p.m.: Speaker Introduction: David Cowen\, president and CEO\, Museum of American Finance \n12:08: p.m.: Presentation: Sebastian Mallaby \n12:45 p.m.: Audience Q&A \n1 p.m.: Closing Remarks: David Cowen \nAbout the Speaker\nSebastian Mallaby is the Paul A. He is the author of five books\, most recently The Power Law: Venture Capital and the Making of the New Future. \nMallaby’s interests cover a wide variety of domestic and international issues\, including central banks\, financial markets\, the implications of the rise of newly emerging powers\, and the intersection of economics and international relations. His previous book\, The Man Who Knew: The Life & Times of Alan Greenspan\, was the winner of the 2016 Financial Times/McKinsey Business Book of the Year Award and the 2017 George S. This book is no ordinary personal finance book. It presents\, in a highly accessible way\, how to effectively understand and manage personal finances\, avoid debt and build for the future\, and use straightforward tools and techniques developed in conjunction with business economics. \nFun to read\, the book leverages core corporate finance principles in a way that helps people become more financially literate in their personal lives. The premise of this book\, that personal and corporate finance can and should be learned together to improve financial wellness and know-how\, is considered a breakthrough. Using approaches that have been tried\, tested\, and proven to work with individuals and employees\, the authors apply common business activities like “due diligence\,” and tools\, such as “financial statement analysis\,” to personal finance. This connection has not been presented before\, either theoretically or practically. And yet it has the power to transform how individuals successfully manage their own finances and\, at the same time\, inform and educate them on the important aspects of the financial direction of the organizations in which they work. \nThis is a must-have book for those who are looking for a credible reference tool for how to manage their own finances effectively and for organizations seeking to assist their employees in sound financial management\, at every level\, both at work and at home. \nAgenda\n12 p.m.: Welcome Remarks and Speaker Introduction: James Kelly\, director\, Gabelli Center for Global Security Analysis \n12:08: p.m.: Presentation: Joseph Calandro \n12:45 p.m.: Audience Q&A \n1 p.m.: Closing Remarks: James Kelly \nAbout the Speaker\nJoe Calandro is a managing director of a global consulting firm with more than 35 years of broad industry\, consulting\, teaching\, and research experience in the United States and internationally focusing on strategy/M&A\, business intelligence/analytics\, and performance/risk management. \nHe is also a fellow of the Gabelli Center for Global Security Analysis at Fordham University\, a contributing editor of Strategy & Leadership\, and a member of the nonprofit Progress Through Business. \nCalandro is the author of The Business of Personal Finance: How to Improve Financial Wellness (Routledge\, 2022)\, Creating Strategic Value (Columbia Business School Publishing\, 2020)\, and Applied Value Investing (McGraw-Hill\, 2009). Can finance fix it? Proponents of environmental\, social\, and governance (ESG) investing say yes. They claim that new financial strategies that consider all stakeholders are essential tools for addressing runaway carbon emissions and stark income inequality\, among other ills. ESG-integrated investments already encompass more than $120 trillion in financial assets. Is this approach really leading to better social and environmental outcomes for all? If not\, how can it be improved? \nIn Sustainable\, a finance industry veteran offers an insider’s look at the promises\, prospects\, and limitations of ESG investing and provides comprehensive solutions that would promote more optimal outcomes. Terrence Keeley argues that both activist and C-suite advocates have been overly optimistic about what ESG can accomplish. Divestment threats are ineffective tools for altering corporate behavior\, and verifiably “good” companies do not systematically generate great returns. Most importantly\, business and finance cannot achieve inclusive\, sustainable growth on their own: Regulators\, public policies\, civil society\, and individuals must all play specific\, complementary roles to shape the future we need. \nAgenda\n12 p.m.: Welcome Remarks: James Kelly\, director\, Gabelli Center for Global Security Analysis \n12:03 p.m.: Speaker Introduction: David Cowen\, president and CEO\, Museum of American Finance \n12:08: p.m.: Presentation: Terrence Keeley \n12:45 p.m.: Audience Q&A \n1 p.m.: Closing Remarks: David Cowen \nAbout the Author\nTerrence Keeley has been an adviser to the world’s largest sovereign wealth funds\, national pension plans\, endowments\, foundations\, and asset managers for more than three decades as a senior client officer at BlackRock and UBS Investment Bank. As far back as we can trace human history\, there have been entrepreneurs. Almost five millennia ago\, copper tool manufacturers set up a factory in what today is southwest Spain\, profiting for hundreds of years from trade around the Mediterranean. Papyri document the diverse investments of an ancient Egyptian businessman\, from grain-yielding land to flax for linen cloth. What do these figures have in common with renowned modern entrepreneurs\, and how do their similarities help us achieve a deeper understanding of entrepreneurship\, as well as the potential for a healthier\, wealthier\, and more equitable and sustainable future? \nDerek Lidow delves into the deep history of innovation to deliver essential new insights into how entrepreneurs create value and bring about change. Telling the captivating stories of people from many different cultures over thousands of years\, he shows how entrepreneurs transform the world through relentless innovation. Lidow demonstrates that far from being heroic lone individuals\, they copy and then add to the inventions of others. The cumulative innovations of swarms of entrepreneurs expand the scale\, scope\, and range of products and services. Lidow emphasizes how entrepreneurship can harm society as well as benefit it\, and he underscores ways to mitigate its harmful side and harness its positive effects. By highlighting the fundamental qualities of innovation\, this book provides an indispensable new perspective on how it is shaping our present and future. \nAgenda\n12 p.m.: Welcome Remarks: James Kelly\, director\, Gabelli Center for Global Security Analysis \n12:03 p.m.: Speaker Introduction: David Cowen\, president and CEO\, Museum of American Finance \n12:08: p.m.: Presentation: Derek Lidow \n12:45 p.m.: Audience Q&A \n1 p.m.: Closing Remarks: David Cowen \nAbout the Speaker\nDerek Lidow is professor of the practice at the Keller Center for Innovation in Engineering Education at Princeton University. He is the author of Startup Leadership: How Savvy Entrepreneurs Turn Their Ideas Into Successful Enterprises (2014) and Building on Bedrock: What Sam Walton\, Walt Disney\, and Other Great Self-Made Entrepreneurs Can Teach Us About Building Valuable Companies (2018)\, as well as more than 100 articles on innovation\, entrepreneurship\, and leadership. Lidow also has practical experience as the founder of a leading market-research firm and CEO of a global semiconductor company. \nCopies of The Entrepreneurs will be distributed to attendees. \nThis event is co-sponsored with the CFA Society New York\, the Gabelli Center for Global Security Analysis\, and the Museum of American Finance. He has been on the front line of finance for all the major events of the last quarter-century\, including the Asian Financial Crisis\, the dot-com bubble and collapse\, 9/11\, and the Great Financial Crisis. What was it like to witness these events firsthand\, at the center of the financial world? \nIn Shut Up and Keep Talking\, Pisani tells captivating stories that reveal what he has learned about life and investing. These include encounters with a host of stars\, world leaders\, and CEOs\, including Fidel Castro\, Robert Downey Jr.\, Walter Cronkite\, Aretha Franklin\, Barry Manilow\, Jack Ma\, Joey Ramone\, and many more. \nPisani describes how the investment world has changed: brokers shouting on the floor of the NYSE; fully electronic trading; investment sages and superstars picking stocks for exorbitant fees; the phenomenal rise of low-cost index funds that are saving investors millions; the belief that investors make rational decisions; and the new age of behavioral finance\, which recognizes the often-irrational nature of human decision-making and seeks to understand its role in the stock market. In his recent book Cathonomics\, Anthony M. Annett unites insights in economics with those from theology\, philosophy\, climate science\, and psychology\, exposing the failures of neoliberalism while offering us a new model rooted in the wisdom of Catholic social teaching and classical ethical traditions. Drawing from the work of Pope Leo XIII\, Pope Francis\, Thomas Aquinas\, and Aristotle\, Annett applies these teachings to discuss current economic challenges such as inequality\, unemployment and underemployment\, climate change\, and the roles of business and finance. \nAnnett is a Gabelli fellow at Fordham University and a senior adviser at the Sustainable Development Solutions Network. He has a Ph.D. in economics from Columbia University and spent two decades at the International Monetary Fund\, where he worked as a speechwriter to the managing director. To the surprise of many\, this has already begun. Investors are abandoning fossil-fuel companies and other polluting industries and financing businesses offering climate solutions. Rising risks\, evolving social norms\, government policies\, and technological innovation are all accelerating this movement of capital. \nBruce Usher offers an indispensable guide to the risks and opportunities for investors as the world faces climate change. He explores the role that investment plays in reducing emissions to net zero by 2050\, detailing how to finance the winners and avoid the losers in a transforming global economy. Usher argues that careful examination of climate solutions will offer investors a new and necessary lens on the future for their own financial benefit and for the greater good. Companies that reduce greenhouse gas emissions will create great wealth\, and\, more importantly\, they will provide a lifeline for humanity. \nGrounded in academic and industry research\, Usher’s insights bring clarity to a complex and controversial topic while illuminating the people behind the numbers.
