The provision of whole-person care requires us to recognize the multidimensional impact that living with a serious illness has on each aspect of a patient’s quality of life.

Conducting a comprehensive biopsychosocial-spiritual assessment lays the groundwork for the sensitive exploration of how serious illness and its treatment influence medical decision-making, especially for those who have been historically, politically, and socially marginalized, as well as those with limited cognitive capacity.

Social workers have the clinical background to provide nuanced advance care planning conversations and may be well positioned to offer leadership in expanding advance care planning programs within their organizations.
